NY Daily News Notices That Porn Is Everywhere
The NY Daily News featured a piece a few days ago that looks at how porn and sex addictions are suddenly mainstream.
In the life-imitates-art department, there’s no better example than David Duchovny, a real sex addict - he recently checked into rehab for sex addiction - who plays one in the Showtime series “Californication.”
If ever there was an indication that certain foibles have now gone public, Duchovny’s real and reel travails is it.
Yet Duchovny’s show is not the only place where once underground practices are moving into the mainstream…
AVN Publisher Paul Fishbein is even quoted in the article:
“Porn has entered the mature years,” says Paul Fishbein, publisher of AVN, the adult film industry trade magazine. “It’s no longer naughty, underground. It’s an up-front, in-your-face business, as much a part of the pop culture as anything else. We’re in a different phase of our pop culture. Kids today have access to material that we didn’t when we were kids. It’s more normal, when a kid turns 18, to have that access to sexual material.”
The article goes on to speculate that maybe it has nothing to do with TV and Internet. Instead, maybe it’s American sexual attitudes “shedding their Puritansim and achieving maturity”. Europe is cited as an example of a more sexually enlightened country that’s doing just fine.
I think there is some truth to both arguments. The fact is that attitudes about sex and porn have been changing over the years, but I think access to television and Internet has had a lot to do with that. In some respects the coursening of our culture is good, but in other respects I’m not so sure. We’ll know in about 10 years or so if we’re raising up a generation of porn addicted, celebrity obsessed freaks.
I think the whole sex addiction thing is fucking bogus. I can understand having a so-called “sex addiction” with respect to banging hookers. If you can’t quit fucking hookers like Charlie Sheen then you probably do have a sex addiction.
What I take issue with is this porn addiction bullshit. If you’re unable to do your job because you can’t stop looking at porn all day, then you have a much bigger problem than an addiction to porn. If your wife throws you out of the house because you were looking at porn, then you married the wrong bitch. Unlike drugs or booze or even hookers, porn is the one vice that won’t kill you or get you thrown in jail — assuming it’s legal porn.
People who actually seek help for their supposed addiction to porn need to shut the fuck up and grow a pair.
