Craigslist finally bowed to pressure over the weekend and shuttered its “Adult Services” section.

Craigslist appears to have surrendered in a legal fight over erotic ads posted on its website, shutting down its adult services section Saturday and replacing it with a black bar that simply says "censored."

The move comes just over a week after a group of state attorneys general said there weren’t enough protections against blocking potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution. It’s not clear if the closure is permanent, and it appears to only affect ads in the United States.

It’s not as if this is going to end prostitution. All the escort services will simply go back to advertising in the Green Sheet and other classifieds. What I find strange is that this crusade against prostitution seems to only target Craigslist. Why are the classified sections of newspapers not being threatened by law enforcement?

Clearly, the powers that be only care if these services are advertised online. Craigslist should not have buckled to pressure.
