GoogleInstantSearch thumb Google Instant Search Is Rolled Out, Adult Keywords Left Out

Google Instant Search went live this afternoon giving you real-time results as you type. One noticeable feature of the new Instant search is what happens when you type in porn related terms — nothing. You get a blank page.

The same holds true for profanity like the f-bomb. Even with SafeSearch turned off you still can’t get instant results with sexy words.

Google was asked about this today during the Q & A at the official roll out and their reasoning makes sense. They said there’s simply no way for the prediction engine to keep from delivering graphic sexual results to children who may be searching for Pussycat Dolls or some other benign subject matter.

So the best way to prevent unintended search results from reaching children was to disable adult related searches from Instant altogether.

I’m usually against censorship of any kind, but this makes sense to me. Google made the point that adult search results will remain the same. All you have to do is press “enter” to get all the porn you want. It’s only the real-time search predictions that adult keywords are blocked from.
