I take no issue with people who simply dislike pornography. Whether that be for moral or religious reasons or it’s just not their thing, it doesn’t matter to me. People who don’t like it shouldn’t have to watch it and I no interest in making them do so.
However, what I do take issue with is phony left-wing hypocrites. If you recall, it was leftist women who pushed the so-called “feminist” movement. They demanded equal pay, equal status, equality across the board. Feminists wanted women to have the freedom to do whatever they wanted. Whether it was killing their babies inside the womb or going to work instead of being a housewife, they wanted women to be free.
Fast forward to 2010 and what are women? They’re free. Women can do anything they want. Some women have chosen to use this freedom to pursue careers in the adult entertainment industry. Some are strippers and some are porn stars and some are both.
That’s where Gail Dines comes in. Gail is a self-described “progressive” and “feminist” meaning she’s a hardcore Pinko leftist. Oddly enough, Gail is also an anti-porn crusader. She gives lectures around the country in which she rails against the porn industry and decries the objectification of women.
Gail is now pimping a brand new book she wrote called Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality and you can read a review of it at The American Spectator.
As an ardent leftist Gail folds herself into a pretzel trying to explain how being an ardent leftist feminist and being against women having the choice to do porn can co-exist. She pretty much makes a moral argument against porn, but because she’s a radical leftist she can’t bring herself to call it that. Her argument is nearly identical to that of religious conservatives, but she doesn’t have the balls to admit it. Instead, she wraps her argument in silly academic gender studies rhetoric.
The truth is that deep in Gail’s gut she feels that pornography is wrong. Her politics tell her women should have choices and freedom, but her conscience is telling her that porn is wrong.
People on the hard left live in a fantasy world of moral relativism. They view the imposition of morality on a society as a kind of imprisonment. They don’t want some church telling them they can’t have an abortion or anything else. There is no good and evil in their world but instead a gray area.
As Nathan Harden points out in his review of Gail’s book, feminism itself is at least 50% responsible for the porn industry.
Feminists are now living in the “anything goes” society they helped to create and suddenly not liking the view. It’s as ironic as it is hypocritical.
I just wish Gail Dines would admit that the feminist dogma she’s been spewing for decades has some flaws in it. It would also be sweet if she would admit the so-called “gender studies” she’s been brainwashing college kids with for years is complete bullshit.
She’s right that most porn today is aggressive and focuses on humiliation and degradation of women. I agree that some of it is violent and unseemly. I agree that porn is getting more and more extreme. Fortunately, no one is forcing women into the porn industry. If a woman doesn’t want to be throat fucked and ass fucked by 5 black men on camera she doesn’t have to be.
Women have the freedom to make porn. Other people have the freedom to criticize it. Gail has the freedom to play both sides and write books. I have the freedom to call Gail a hypocrite and continue watching porn.
